During our H2Roadtrip we received a lot of questions how we drive in hydrogen, well we will explain this also on LinkedIn!
We bought a standard Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat at Bos V8 Supercars in the Netherlands. This standard electric pick-up has a standard towing capacity of 3.500 kg, enough to tow our Tinyhouse with range-extender.
On our self-built Tinyhouse we mounted a H2storage CHSS (Compressed Hydrogen Storage System). This CHSS is connected to a EVS Hydrogen H-450 H2 ICS Wankel Rotation Motor of 25kW. This engine drives a 400 DC e-Generator to charge the batteries of the Ford directly.
The range extender is only controlled on/off so it operates at a constant speed with output of around 22 kW continuously. Next time we would choose the double disc engine version with 50 kW output to secure faster charging. The energy consumption of our combination is around 450 W/km and we faced the problem that we used more energy than the generator produced, so we had to stop for extra charging.
What we also should improve is the insulation of the motor, since it is to loud for this moment. We will look into this directly after we have finished our H2roadtrip.
We have chosen the H2 ICE solution from EVS Hydrogen above a fuel cell solution, due to it’s simplicity, cost price and weight.
We are going to evaluate the system the coming weeks for small adjustments and let’s see if there is interest for our H2 range extender solution form the market.
