Dutch couple on 12,000km zero-emission hydrogen-fuelled road trip.
Dutch entrepreneur couple Andre and Els Molengraaf are on a hydrogen-fuelled road trip that will take them 12,000km (7,500 miles) through Europe with zero emissions.
The couple plans to pass through 12 countries in their Ford F-150 Lightning pick-up truck capable of driving up to 1,200km (750 miles) on a single fuelling.
According to Andre, the range will allow the travellers to cover the distances between the filling-stations and facilities during the trip while emitting zero emissions.
Starting out in Oslo, Norway on 28th April, 2024, the couple will arrive at PRF Gas Solutions in Leiria, Portugal on 14th June before they head to Italy, Greece and finally, Turkey.
“Over the last decade people always spoke about hydrogen as the fuel for the future,” said Andre Molengraaf, owner of H2storage. “With our ‘H2roadtrip’ we want to show the world that this future has already started.”
“We want to prove that with the right storage and planning, there is no limitation today to really start the transition to hydrogen.”
Modified to enable charging the batteries during driving from the hydrogen-driven generator, the truck will tow a specially designed trailer camper carrying two extra H2storage tanks.
The total weight of the vehicle adds up to around seven tonnes, including the camping trailer where the couple are living during the trip.
Most of the energy for cooking, hot water and other electric home appliances will be derived from the generator and PV solar panels placed on the roof of the trailer.
In 2021, PRF launched DRHYVE – the first portable hydrogen refuelling station in Portugal.
There are currently around 265 HRS in Europe, with the vast majority located in Germany (around 100), followed by France and the Netherlands.
